The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a test for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like typical body horror, but inside Together exists a deep examination about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the country for her career. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
